The FJR1300 was first launched in Europe in 2001 and later in 2002 it was launched in the USA. In 2003 the sport tourer won Motorcycle of the Year from the Motorcyclist Magazine.

Yamaha bikes launched a new and refreshed model in 2006; design changes included significant trailing arm changes, a curved radiator exhibiting a larger surface area, instrumentation changes, an upgraded alternator and significant attention to airflow changes to rectify heat issues identified in the first generation model.

The FJR1300 comes with a 1,298 cc engine mounted transversely and is mated to a five speed close ratio gearbox. The 2006 and later models feature a fused, switched cigarette-lighter style accessory jack in the left central locking glove box.

One of the features that made the FJR1300 stand out from competitor models is the electronically adjustable windscreen. To offer riders greater comfort and wind protection, the windscreen can be adjusted by 4.6 mm. The 2006 model also features an adjustable seat, which can be raised or lowered in two steps to give a total height range of 20 mm.

The Yamaha FJR1300 is also the first sport tourer to have a semi automatic gearbox, it features Yamaha’s Chip Controlled Shift offering clutch less gear changes. The new system takes the stress away from the clutch hand and left foot, during stop-go urban driving the driver can feel the strain of constant gear changes. Rider fatigue is reduced by this system, rider enjoyment is therefore increased.
